I must say "too much junk in the trunk" is not a rationale I've seen before for why SN2 reactions don't go at tertiary carbons. My usual way of explaining it is "it's too squishy".

The word squishy gets used a lot in mechanism discussions. Certainly more often than the word bendy, which also comes up from time to time. And good old "hates its life".

Also...

It's such a shame John Barrowman is so shy, eh?

(The boxers are currently at 2050 pounds. :p)

I keep opening the window and forgetting what it was I wanted to post about. Now I remember. John Barrowman's autobiography and how wonderfully awesome it is. It's absolutely HILARIOUS. Katie! There are FOOTNOTES! Nothing is funnier than footnotes.

He goes on really fun tangents about absolutely anything. NOtably a huge section on theatre superstitions and how many times he's been zinged by The Scottish Play.

And every chapter is named for a song. NOt surprisingly, mostly showtunes. You'd think he was a musical theatre guy or something. :p

And there are lots of pictures! Mm, John Barrowman. :p

Oh, and...

Merry Christmas everyone! :p

Back from a fun weekend in Toronto! We watched more BSG with [livejournal.com profile] i_paint_the_sky, finishing up the Kobol arc and seeing up to Final Cut. So I got to know two more Cylons! And apparently there is impending doom.

We also introduced Vicki to the wonders of Classic Who. Though Robot lacks a quarry. :p Still, it introduces Four.

Also, I wonder how much BSG/Doctor Who crossover fic there is that exists solely to pair Cylons with the appropriately numbered Doctor. :p

Oh, and I gave Vicki The Wiz for Christmas, so we watched this. The phrase "acid trip" comes to mind. :p

Also, Vicki is awesome and gave me John Barrowman's autobiography for Christmas. It is shiny and will entertain me on the train ride. As will the other books I bought when she took us to see the store she works at. And Fables 11, which we had to pick up at another store. We'll see if I actually hold out until the train ride with that one. :p

You'd think the undergrads have exams coming up or something. The help room was absolutely hopping. At least it wasn't boring. THough there was the awkward moment of "... I haven't done a Fischer Projection since first year because I'm not a sugar chemist..." Luckily the first year TA stepped in to answer the question about stereochemistry in Fischer projections.

Yeah, I know, you're all making the face. A Fischer projection is a weird way of portraying molecules. That is basically only used in sugar chemistry. Which I don't do. :p

Also, I absolutely adore Olive on Pushing Daisies. She is marvelous.

John Barrowman's new CD is marvelous. He sings a song from CHESS!

John Barrowman's Closet!

Man, he's lucky he's out of said closet. There simply isn't ROOM for him in there. :p His closet is brilliant though. :p

Reason #8809823473 that I love Neil Gaiman:

I do it because it's fun. I do it because writing is, like death, a lonely business. I do it because I've never managed to keep a diary, and because it's amazingly useful being able to search the blog and find out when I was last in Finland (say).

Because... I totally do that too. Minus the Finland. But I definitely use LJ to check when I did something. :p Neil Gaiman, you are a DORK and I love you for it.

My students were doing Stewie Griffin impressions today. Specifically the "Mommy, Mommy, Mom, Mom, Mom" bit. This is after they asked if I have nightmares where everyone is calling my name.

They were running three different experiments today, so things were a little chaotic. :p

All this Barrowmany goodness has led me to realize that "Always a Woman" is totally a Mal/Saffron song. Involving the plans for her to keep coming back and screwing the crew over in an almost affectionate way. And yet "She will promise you more than the garden of Eden. Then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding."

YOU KNOW IT'S TRUE.

John Barrowman makes me all melty inside. Thaaaaaaaaank you [livejournal.com profile] ardnaid.

We've decided I practically have a disability in the glovebox because my hands are so small. Lucky me. :p

And of course it was TORCHWOOD NIGHT!

Torchwood spoilers )

First of all, I have a new surefire cheer up video! John Barrowman on a British quiz show of some sort called Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Challenging the host to a gay-off! Is win! Brings a smile to my life forever. :p "You have OUT-GAYED me Barrowman!" "Let's have a gay-off! Lips pursed, hands on the table, go!". :p

There was a baby determined to entertain the entire church today. I was trying to calculated her distraction radius, but I realized that didn't really make sense since she was distracting more people sitting BEHIND her because they could see her climbing on the pew. The only people in FRONT of her she was distracting were the ones she poked when she was toddling along. Well, and people who turned around when she made noises. So I settled for zone of distraction instead. It was considerable, if the number of people giggling around me are an indication. :p
