Fan Expo was awesome, if linerific.

And I talk about it a lot )

Sometimes I wonder what normal families talk about. I have a feeling it's not...

Well, I sent my dad a link to this comic. And his response...

Was kinda epic )

FanExpo was pretty fun. Some definite organizational issues that I would have expected not to be seeing at a professionally run convention. Ranging from little things like the fact that the program book at no point contained a page that listed everything that was going on at the same time (you had to look through the different streams to plan) to the fact that they were letting people talk to Scott McNeil for like five minutes when there was a line. Scott's line was probably the shortest one I was in all day, but it took forever to get through. After over an hour, we gave up on him and went to see Aaron Douglas instead. Especially since we had people we were supposed to meet like fifteen minutes earlier.

Not at all the con's fault, but it was kinda sad that we didn't get the Mary McDonnell Q&A today. Obviously having to go back to LA for a memorial service is a very good reason to not do the panel, but I was quite looking forward to it. Aaron Douglas filled in, which was still pretty darn awesome. I asked him if Ron Moore ever laughed maniacally during season 4.5. He said that he doesn't think he did anything else. :p

The Q&A sessions were definitely the high point of the con. I could listen to Avery Brooks talk for quite a while. Partly because he's interesting, partly because he has a really nice voice. :p He sang! Leonard Nimoy also sang, "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins". His panel was generally hilarious, definitely a great time.

A really sweet vendors' room, incidentally. This con is definitely about the celebrity panels and the vendors' room, because there actually wasn't a terrible lot else going on. Whether I go next year will definitely depend on who they have.

Speaking of the vendor room, I am now determined to get action figures of as many of my RP characters as possible. Since I got Hobbie at Polaris and picked up Bill at Fan Expo. I was sad that they seemed to have every Doctor Who character except Martha.

All things considered, I'm really glad I paid for a photo with Mary McDonnell. Mostly because I got to hug her. :p Also, she was excited by my costume. :p So have a couple pictures!

Everyone loves pictures! )

It's perfectly normal to sit on the floor and try to stand up without moving one foot if you're RPing as Hobbie, right?

Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure I'm committing some sort of nerd sacrilege by playing a Star Wars character AND a Star Trek character. I can't help it though! Who could resist Quark?

Outside of RP, my week has been the thrilling word of proofreading Laura's thesis so she can submit tomorrow morning. And graduate and rent me her townhouse. The things I will do to get out of this hellpit.

Half a day tomorrow and then off to FanExpo! Yay!

Ugh, just remembered to pay my tuition so I can get my bus pass tomorrow. Now I have no money. :p Good thing I get paid tomorrow. :p

How I Met Your Mother made me crave cupcakes. So today I... made cupcakes. This would be brilliant except for the part where it was thirty eight degrees with the humidity and thus having the oven on was an exceedingly poor idea.

But I can has cupcakes once I make frosting! And that's the important part.

Also been watching DS9 because I'm kinda sorta maybe probably gonna app Quark in Glaxcin. :p

This is mostly a GIP.

But I will add that I attempted to play Sims in windowed mode today. The phrase, I believe, is "Epic Fail"? :p It ran well for about ten minutes and then... LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG of DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

I am sad, because I didn't get to put Jag in his "I am a terrible Star Wars fan" outfit. I finally found an outfit I like for him! It's... a Klingon outfit. :p And Jaina gets a Starfleet dress uniform for formalwear. Because it has PANTS! I have some other dress uniforms, but the female versions all have skirts, and Jaina's a pants kind of girl. :p

I've been doing illicit chemistry the past two days. Not only is it fun to say, it's fun to do and gives me something TO do. :p

See, we're not SUPPOSED to work in a lab until we've had WHMIS. We can't take WHMIS without an employee email account. Grad studies is being slow about putting in appointments. Grad studies doesn't understand the need for WHMIS.

Thus, illicit chemistry. What's my supervisor going to do, tell the department head? :p

Right now I'm making starting materials to get used to where everything is and how to use a Schlenk line. I'm doing a Grignard reaction, which is pretty exciting since I've used it as an answer in class plenty of times, but never actually done one before.

I had another safety training thing today, which was not ENTIRELY useless. I found out where the Occupational Health and Safety office is. :p It's in a cavelike corridor. The point is that I now have a form for prescription safety glasses. Now I just need to get an optometrist appointment and I can stop doing the safety glasses over regular glasses thing. :p

AND I found out vision care is covered by the grad student health plan. :p

The stuff my mother was sending UPS arrived yesterday. So now I have my books and movies and fabric. It will be interesting making it all FIT. :p

Oh, and did you know there are themed Star Trek boxed sets? I may kinda sorta have a Q collection now. :p

We amused the cashier at the grocery store today by playing rock-paper-scissors to see who was paying. We'd forgotten whose turn it was. :p She informed us that next time we're at her till, Ryan had better be the one paying. :p

Most importantly: Our bed is supposed to get here tomorrow, praise be. :p

The debate yesterday was pretty unpleasant. We managed to talk as long as we were supposed to, but I felt like our arguments were pretty weak. It would have been SO much easier to be arguing that the paper was novel, seeing as we've never seen anything like it and attempts to search the literature were less than fruitful. :p

Grey's Anatomy night with Lily, Maria and McGeek was great fun again. Afterwards, we watched Star Trek vids on YouTube and generally geeked it up. I now have a powerful desire to watch TNG, which is unfortunate, since we don't actually get a station that airs it. But it's Thanksgiving, and my parents get Space, so I may get to catch some this weekend. :p

Hi, my name is Margaret and I'm a geek. :p

Having a roommate from the same hometown is useful, incidently. I'm getting a ride back to Riverview with Sammy's family. Am I packed yet? Of course not! :p

The plan for tonight is to introduce Kate to Firefly, which is always fun. :D Then Fundy with my family on Saturday and at some point I shall hopefully do some schoolwork. :p Oy, this is a much needed long weekend. :p

And yes, this song is an attempt to wake myself up before Quantum. :p
