Sometimes I wonder what normal families talk about. I have a feeling it's not...

Well, I sent my dad a link to this comic. And his response...

Surely you joke? First, since when did extinct beasts become experts in physics?

Who says they are different universes. Different galaxies sure but universes? Based on what? hyperdrive? The Borg used hyperdrive corridors in exactly the same way as they are used in Star Wars. Problem with hyperdrive is that you need to go there first to plot the way - warp drive allows you to manevuer in real time. The present galaxy chose warp technology with the goal of attaining Warp 10.0, which gets you nearly anywhere using wormholes and string theory. Besides, we have clearly established that the Vong are old Klingons - even speak an older version of Klingon and they came from another galaxy than the Star Wars galaxy;hence, it is exactly as Lucas says a Galaxy far far away (space and time are the same thing so the long time ago is irrelevant). The millenium Falcon is a freighter - the Enterpise E is 1.5 km long and carries more firepower than a DeathStar, plus real shields, and real weapons (turbo lasers versus phasers; proton torpedoes (based on nukes) versus polyphasic torpedoes (basd on anti-matter)). Outside hyperspace, the Enterprise flies circles (in three dimensions) around the Falcon - God knows what the Defiant would do to it! The Millenium Falcon's engines are fusion based, not matter-anti matter (Enterprise) or point singularity (Romulans, Defiant, and the split-ships). As for Federation HQ (earth) - have you forgotten the power of the space stations and orbital defenses? They are designed to take on multiple Borg cubes! Even Q thinks they are adequate. And by brining in Q I make the point that they are the same universe simply because Q says they are - Q has actually met the devil and says he is nothing like Satan!

Oh, and federation gunners can hit their targets - speed of light and all that plus damn good computers. Oh, and polyphasic torpedoes are more than a match for a sun crusher - besides even the old NCC 1701 of Kirk could cause a sun to supernova - just depends upon where you put your anti-matter. Then there is Data - Han Solo is no match for Data who, by the way, does not exist in the force. Data is smarter, faster, stronger, and much better at gambling - the odds make no difference to Data either. I am afraid that who ever put this comic together had no notion of the physics involved in either series. Besides, what do physicists know -they need to come up with a whole new class of energy to explain the continuing acceleration in the expansion of the universe. I can hear Q and the Vong laughing even as I write this.

So, given that these are two dinosaurs having a debate, how can you possibly use the comic as the basis for anything ... AND HOW COULD YOU FORGET THE VONG ARE KLINGONS???

gods help us if you guys get into one of those discussions in a pub. It'd be worse than a Red Sox/Yankees pub brawl :P

Uh, the Enterprise E is 600 some odd meters. And I don't know about the E, but according to the technical schematics for the D, its type X phasers were rated in the megawatt range--a single turbolaser from any Star Destroyer would blow through the E's shielding like it was nothing. To achieve the sort of energy requirements for navigating the Star Wars galaxy, something beyond antimatter is required: the so-called "hypermatter" reactors of most starships. Come on. Proton torpedoes are admittedly pretty stupid when their stated energy yield (1.5kt) is dwarfed by a laser cannon, much less turbolasers that can vaporize entire asteroids in a moment.

Yes, THIS is my response. :p

I'm pretty sure I still have a Klingon dictionary somewhere. One of these days I'm going to find it and try this.

I kind of love your family, Yubsie. :D But T-Rex knows many things about physics. (http://www.qwantz.com/index.php?comic=67) He is also acquainted with the devil. (http://www.qwantz.com/index.php?comic=523) :P

I dunno. It was fairly old and on VHS XD My girlfriend had it and insisted we watch it. Harrison Ford was ridiculously young. We kept comparing Han Solo to Duo, it was pretty hilarious.

It was an okay movie. I feel like, as a stand alone film, it was pretty weak. But I guess when it becomes part of STAR WARS and that whole universe and all the movies/books/what-have-you therein, it was pretty epic. I think my favorite part was the terrible fx. Seriously, way to have cooler graphics than even Trek did ;3

That's not sarcasm :V
