Oh. My. God. Just finished with the computer related scare of my LIFE. I'm giving a talk at the conference I'm going to (have I mentioned this? And the fact that I am TERRIFIED?) this week. I was showing Yining my slides in one of the rooms and got ready to leave for lunch. Except... I forgot that my computer was hooked up to the projector. And tripped and dropped said computer on the floor.

I tried to turn it on and it couldn't detect a bootable device. I ran the onboard diagnostic and it was giving my a harddrive error.

Well, frak, right?

So cue a lot of me freaking out about what I was going to do, how I was going to bring the backup copy of my talk back to being consistent with the newer copy on my harddrive, how I was going to make the changes that still needed making. My train for Toronto leaves at 3:30, just for good measure, what do I do? Do I try to find a computer repair place in Toronto and hope it's a quick fix? Do I buy a cheap netbook with PowerPoint and use that? What the frak am I supposed to do?

Fortunately, I noticed that the harddrive had popped out a bit and pushed it back in, hoping that it would actually do the trick. And, THANK GOD, it did. So now I have Windows booted up and Powerpoint open and all is well. But EEK.

I think Schroedy likes this costuming hobby of mine. She is currently sleeping on the fabric. The white fabric, of course, as her fur wouldn't show up NEARLY as well on the blue. I'm pretty sure I don't have to cut anything more from the white though.

This is a Water Pretear costume for Anime North. Which is in two weeks. I started the costume today. Because I am THAT AWESOME. It's going pretty decently though. I have the basic shape of the bodice down. Though I need to figure out how to actually do it up in the back, as the art explanation is "It's all one piece, screw physics". I'm not sure I have enough slack to do velcro, so I may try making it lace up. I also have the underskirt done, it just needs to be hemmed. Though I want to be sure the back is done up properly because I try hemming it, I think.

So that just leaves the detailing and the overskirt. Hemming the overskirt is going to take forever. This may not have been a wise costume considering I hate hemming. Oops.

My laptop keyboard has more or less given out. The letter keys have gotten wonky in addition to the missing Ctrl and F5. So I decided it was time for a USB keyboard. All I could find at Best Buy was a roll up one. I tried it. The keys wobble and it's clearly meant for someone who types more slowly than I do. So I returned that and went to future shop and now have a proper keyboard. The only tricky thing now is positioning it so I can still use the trackpad. :p

I finally got Gaussview and Gaussian to play nice! It turns out that the problem was that Gaussview was saving the input files in a DOS format and that was given Gaussian on a Linux machine CONNIPTIONS. So all I had to do was open the file in a Linux text editor and resave. Man, things should be this simple more often. :p

I also finally got new glasses! After having the same pair since high school, I really needed them. They really hadn't been the same since one of the most prominent main group chemists in the country broke them. :p It's so weird though, since I keep trying to shove them back up into place even though I don't HAVE to. Since they now actually stay in place like they're supposed to. :p

One pair is the same shape as the pair I've had forever. The other pair I got adventurous with. Which means I notice the frames and it's WEIRD. :p

I successfully installed my shiny new RAM. Tiny hands are useful for getting things in place with a lot of wires in the way. Katikabe, it was REALLY simple to install it, I managed it in my fishie seeing state just fine. I'm LOVING how much better my computer is running now. Especially the SIMS! The ridiculag, she is GONE! (Big picture post coming tomorrow, too tired to upload right now)

Text sumamry though! Simon finally got the hint and gave birth to a beautiful green baby girl, who I named Marigold. Then I zipped off to Bob's house so he could marry River. Then I created a family and killed the parents in weird and wonderful ways so Book could start his orphanage. I used the InSimenator so I could actually see Death by Sattelite and Death by Flies. Book has adopted three of the four offspring from that family. He has the two children, a boy named Victor and a girl named Susan, and a little toddler girl named Holly. There's still a little toddler boy named Jason waiting, but the game only allows one adoption a day. The point is, there is an ORPHANAGE on the second floor of Inara's house.

So sleepy. But computer wonderfully not laggy! Joy! Joy!

Grr hatred Netgear, your tech support is SO not so much with the supportive. First I call up trying to get help and am informed that I have to register my product at their website. Nevermind that my problem is that I suddenly can't get on the internet because the router has spontaneously kicked. So I plug the modem directly into the computer, spend a good five minutes hunting through their horrible website to FIND the freaking place to register. Then Vicki calls tech support and is informed that only people who bought their product within the last three months are special enough to get phone tech support. HATRED. >:O

My printer spontaneously fixed itself! :D I'd be confused, except it spontaneously BROKE itself in the first place. One day I sat down at the computer and it was all "Unknown USB device". I was staring at the computer muttering "It's a PRINTER. You knew that yesterday!". Today it was suddenly all "New Hardware detected! Samsung ML 1450... Your new hardware is now installed." NOw, it's not new, but I don't care, because I have a working printer again! So I was able to print my thesis to edit it, because the next hand in date is looming big time.

And, if the music didn't give it away, I found my headphones. Well, my backups... I think my little ones must be in Duffy's trunk.

Also, half the boys still aren't here. They must be SERIOUSLY hungover. ANd I swear, half the other labs just didn't come back from lunch. :p

Dear stupid computer:

Would it KILL you to run AIM Express? PLEASE?

No love,

Me

Seriously, why doesn't this stupid browser have the Norton thingy to allow pop ups from that page? Is it SO much to ask?
