So last night I had a really weird dream. For some reason Han, Leia and Jaina were in the last two parts of The Ribos Operation instead of Four and Romana. They got along a lot better, obviously, but conmen, catacombs, Binro the heretic? All there. Except for some reason Binro didn't die. Possibly because I liked him dangit. Though if that was the case, you'd think Anakin would have been there and alive. :P I can't help noticing Jacen was Sir Not Appearing in This Dream. Best thing he ever did. :p

Seriously though, wtf. Is it because all my icons of Dream are mean? :p

Uh, Karen Traviss?

Minor Revelation spoilers )
yubsie: (Default)
I have found a brilliant plan to make Revelation more bearable! I have decided that Fett's motivation for EVERYTHING is that Vader never did figure out that when Boba Fett said "As you wish", what he really meant was "I love you". So of course he's going to be nasty to my Jaina! All those decades, pining for her grandfather!

I figure this is the "reading the EU" equivalent of replacing a key word of one's essay with the words "yaoi" (started because Plato's thoughts on commerce become very entertaining when turned into his thoughts on yaoi :p)
yubsie: (Default)
I want a space battle in an EU novel where the starfighters spell a word. Because it would be awesome. :p

Also, someone needs to invent an S-wing so Wes can start SEXY Squadron with the most mismatched set of snubfighters EVAH!

Welcome to my brain. :p

My New Year's resolution is to actually write interesting first sentences on the first post of the month so when I do that meme next year it's less lame. :p This may be the lamest resolution ever, but it's mine. :p

The Death Star book was actually really good. I'd heard of it only as the book with a lot of naked Daala, but it was REALLY GOOD. No one told me that it's actually about REGULAR PEOPLE! By the end, I was getting so sad that the station blew up, because I was attached to the regular people characters. I was attached to a STORMIE. :p I was attached to the guy who FIRED THE LASER. :p I never expected to be, but there you go. :p Other characters included a medic from the Medstar duology (oops, already attached to him...), a cantina owner and a bouncer, a TIE pilot, an architect, a stowaway and a LIBRARIAN. So yeah, it's actually a really fun book. :p

I also finished watching Torchwood. Oh Jack. That really says it all. Oh Jack. :p

So, while realizing I should stop looking at the BFC thread in Lit because it makes me want to throw a wizard in a snowbank. (Background for those of you I haven't been ranting at: People are praising BFC for being some amazing piece of work. Largely based on Leia's plot. I chimed in that Leia's plot COULD have been interesting if she weren't so OOC it HURT. This led to a long argument with them calling it character development and me calling it writing a strong female character as a simpering idiot. The difference is, one of us is right. :p)

This has, however, led to two interesting linked realizations. The first is the latest reason that Del Rey's run has sat so badly with me. The other is a theory on why it mostly seems to be male fans who DO respond well to Del Rey's run. Not that all male fans do, as some are obviously just as annoyed and bitter as I am.

What it basically comes down to is that Star Wars isn't a universe for gritty reality. Star Wars is a universe for childhood hero. Who do female Star Wars fans frequently point to as their childhood hero? Not the helpless Princess Aurora. :p Princess Leia, kicker of asses. :p

Which leads to part two. Little girls of our generation didn't exactly have a lot of options for FEMALE heroes. Male characters were a dime a dozen, but female characters who were actually childhood hero material were a rare breed. So that reinforces Star Wars as a universe for childhood heroes. And the fact that the female characters have been written so consistently lousily? Well that's just a kick in the teeth.

At least Robert Munsch has never betrayed me by deciding to write "The Paperbag Princess Made a Lousy Queen". :p

And even if he did, my final childhood hero is my Great-Great Aunt Kate and no publishing company can spoil THAT. And she was so completely and utterly awesome. :p

WIN!

It's been an ordeal, but I finally managed to retrieve my books from Kitchener. :D

I read Fury on the way there. I'm... actually enjoying a Star Wars book! This needs to happen more often. :p

Fury spoilers )

Also, Wicked in German is made of win.

After another THREE STORE RUN I finally have Fury. It should not be this difficult to find a book that has been out for a week. At least the Coles people remembered it having BEEN on the shelf, but selling. They were listed as having one copy, but the system only updates once a day.

I'm somewhat skeptical that the same is true for the FORTY TWO phantom copies they had at Chapters. Especially since that's the number of phantom copies they had LAST time I looked. I blame all the random NOT BOOKS. MAYBE if they didn't have all sorts of space devoted to tacky Christmas baubles, they would actually be able to get BOOKS on the shelves in a timely manner. Seriously, what is with all the random junk? THey're a BOOK store for crying out loud. I go there for books. If I wanted tacky Christmas decorations, I'd go to a department store.

So they're not in my good book right now.

The Coles that didn't have it is in my good book though. Because the lady there actually ANSWERED "Hi, can you either help me find Star Wars: Fury or tell me where the nearest independent bookstore is?" I mean, I was JOKING because I was getting really frustrated, and she actually told me where to find one. :p

I wound up finding it at the next Chindicoles store, so I still got to use my discount card. It still should NOT have been this difficult to find. This isn't an obscure back catalogue title, it came out LAST WEEK. It also wasn't the release day, so they'd had PLENTY of time to actually put it on the SHELF.

GOodness knows I never had this problem in Middle of Nowhere, New Brunswick. THEY always had the new book on the shelf on the release date (or a couple days early... :p). And they had a feel for the demand for things and ordered accordingly. :p

So, today I picked up some Christmas decorations and office supplies. I also went to three bookstores.

I did not buy Fury.

I went to THREE BOOKSTORES and couldn't find a copy of Fury.

THREE BOOKSTORES.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was just a Traviss Fett-fest. But people are actually ENJOYING this one. This one is ALLSTON. This is probably going to be the last good book in the series.

And I DON'T HAVE IT. Even though I went to THREE BOOKSTORES.

So last night I was reading one of my old fics because I got a review for it. A five year old fic. :p And I realized, looking back, that it was full of an ABSURD amount of innuendo. And accidental foreshadowing. :p Also, it's just really weird looking at the first fic I ever posted. :p

So I decided it would be fun to do a commentary!

Title: Not the World's Greatest Babysitters

So, I'm insane. And now have a rough synopsis for I Wish I Could Quit EU: A Bitter Star Wars Fan Musical This is still pretty rough, and there's a lot of places that need a song but I don't have one yet.

Also, I'm always looking for more Taco Bell patrons. So if you can think of characters from ANY fandom that are mysteriously absent at some point, let me know.

Rough Synopsis )

This time we get generalized bitterness at Del Rey! To "I Wish I Could Go Back to College" from Avenue Q. :p

It's been a while since I wrote filk complaining about stupid Del Rey. So here we go! Today's subject? Jaina can has reel plot plz?

Jaina's Lament )
yubsie: (Default)
We're moving in to the apartment today. While I'm super excited to have a place to live, I'm teh sad that I'm not sure when we'll have internet. Though I'll probably try to find a place with wireless access that I can take Puck to in the meantime.

Also, I finished Inferno. I actually... liked it! I breezed through it in a day instead of a tedious slog.

Spoilers... Tess, why weren't you online for this?! )

OMFGSPOILERS!!! )

Today's (well, yesterday's) sad realization about Jaina Solo:

She had a more interesting plot when she was FIVE YEARS OLD than she does now. Ickle!Jaina was cool. Ickle!Jaina was independant. Ickle!Jaina escaped her kidnappers using a little multitool that only worked on wood and the ability to move sand around with the Force.

Compare this to adult!Jaina, who has been trapped in a love triangle for the past FIFTEEN YEARS without any real plot. I'd say she was acting like she was fourteen, but we saw her at fourteen, and she was still cool. Fourteen year old Jaina was basically a female Han Solo. Fourteen year old Jaina DID things. :p At age thirty? Invisible plotline!

Oh Jaina, what went wrong?

Oh, right. Del Rey. :p

[livejournal.com profile] non_horation: it's like when I burned the baby but it happens to everyone :p

Oh Tessie. Think, THEN type. :p

I finally managed to get Pets for Sims 2. Took store credit from Walmart and then bought it at EB Games instead. :p

So now the Solos have all sorts of critters. They have a bird named Millenium, because I couldn't resist. They also have a boxer named Heero who is a star in show business. And they adopted a puppy... who grew up to be a POODLE. Jacen has a POODLE. :p

Apartment hunting remains frustrating. We've been trying to find a place in London, but everywhere that we call either doesn't have vacancies or expects us to show up in person. Which is kinda hard when you're a thousand kilometers away. And I don't know how I'm supposed to arrange to move all my stuff when I don't have an address to arrange to send said stuff TO. I just want a place to LIVE is that so much to ask?

Happier, I hadn't listened to this song in AGES. I just fell in love with it all over again. It's so much crack! :p
yubsie: (Default)
Sweet, sweet internet, never leave me again! :p

I hate apartment hunting. It's hard enough finding vacancies, and then explaining that actually, no I can't show up in person, we're currently roughly a thousand kilometres away! I just want to have a place to live and not have to be doing this anymore.

I've played lots of sims in my internet deprived state. Amid my epidemic of baby girls, Winter and Tycho can't seem to have anything but boys. They have their university oopsie baby Bail who is now a teenager, and then they have a toddler named Airen and baby twins named Garm and Jan. Also, the awesomeness of Seasons includes toddlers aging up to randomly selected toddler hair, and Airen wound up with Winter white hair, which is awesome.

Destruction, Desire and Despair are all now in university. I actually decided Destiny needed a wife, because his house is going to get SO boring once Del leaves too. :p University in fall is a dream, incidently. They fill the class bar SO crazy fast. Combined with only playing every other semester and they're all flying. Though the clock has clicked into winter now. I hope I get to see snow soon. :p

Thisland Washburne is now married to Marigold Tam (Simon's alien MPreg baby :p). It took ages for me to get them married because they were on such different schedules. :p

I looked into manufacturer exchanging Pets, but it looks like the shipping charges would be absurd. So I'm going to return for store credit and just buy the bloody thing elsewhere. :p

Finally, my brother got fed up with CBC's nonsense and downloaded the current season of Doctor Who. We only have three episodes to go.

And I have been DYING to squee and didn't have internet )
