So, my reaction mixture was pink today. It was very pretty. Too bad the product is supposed to be a white solid. I don't have a clue what I DID make, but it's not what I was trying to make. Also, the stuff that collected in the rotovap trap definitely shouldn't have been pink. The pink turned yellow when I added acetone. It was very cool whatever it was. :p

The local strawberries have appeared at my grocery store! THis makes me a happy Ewok. And distracts from confusing pink things. :p

You know what I love about being home? LOBSTER. It is apparently dirt cheap out here right now, so we had some for supper. It was marvelous.

I am home! Ten hours of driving is REALLY LONG! Also, the people at Dunkin' Donuts put WAY too much sugar in their coffee. I was worried there wouldn't be ENOUGH sugar because I just said milk and sugar and I usually get a double double with milk. But no, it was RIDICULOUSLY sweet. Insane.

We went shopping last night after the conference. So now I can say I've been in Macy's. I am far too poor for Macy's, but I have been in one. I went to Borders for the siren call of AMERICAN COVER PRICES. I was good though and only picked up the first Song of Ice and Fire book (yes, I'm finally caving). Partly because the British postdoc we adopted at the conference got the only copies of a couple other things I was looking at. :p

Oh, and I got Rune Factory 2 because it looks fun. Though I am confused why there are two Gamestops in one mall. :p

Also, did you know Long Branch, NJ has a sizable Brazilian community? We found this out while talking to the staff at the Brazilian place that we went to for supper. It was the awesomest buffet ever, they charged by the pound. Dinner for all three of us came to $21, including these amazingly awesome fresh juices. And the food was soooooooooo good, there was amazing squash. The less adventurous members of our group went to a fancier place. Their tip was more than our meal. :p

Chemists shouldn't be allowed in restaurants where they put paper on the tables and give you crayons. I may have covered it with chemistry doodles of working through the reaction I did the other day. I figured out where all the atoms go!

Yesterday I made a super awesome grilled cheese sandwiches. I put oregano and garlic powder in the butter and it was NUMMY.

Sunny and I are on a quest to see how many whore jokes we can manage before May because Tess is in the whorus of The Best LIttle WHorehouse In Texas. It's fun. :p

Thanksgiving was great fun. Jiacheng bought an entire turkey... when he lives alone. So he invited me, Ryan and one of his friends I hadn't met over to help him eat it. I brought (garlic!) mashed potatoes and brownies. And there was pie.

I am one full Ewok.

We were late because I decided I had to watch SJA before making the potatoes. :p

Clowns? Still creepy )

Rich didn't show up to our class today, so my presentation was a lot less scary than I was worrying about. I blanked on a really easy question and wound up answering it after class, which was embarassing. :p But I led nicely into the day's lecture material, so that was kinda neat. :p Rich and I had a chat in the Cragg about how excited his dad was about the Angewandte Chemie cover paper. :p

The lab today was theoretical stuff with model kits, but I swear they haven't gotten to half this stuff in the lectures. I had a "fun" time trying to explain Newman projections, which I don't remember even TOUCHING on in first year. I also got to argue with the other TA about whether a certain formula had isomers or not. (I won, she was forgetting about regioisomers :p)

Supper today looked suspiciously like lunch. As in I packed two identical sandwiches, two juiceboxes, some crackers and carrots and ate half of this at lunch and half at supper. The joy of not having Powerpoint and having to put a presentation together in the Cragg. Though now I have Open Office to fix that particular problem. My Quantum presentation is good to go, hopefully the questions won't be too bad... Then there's just the Spec one for Monday, which will be similar to this but with more math. :p I stole more than one diagram out of my spec notes. :p INcluding the one that I intend to spend a good chunk of time on because it's Khash's favourite diagram so I can say a lot about it. :p

I made an "Emergency Chocolate Run" to Sassy's to buy fudge around eight. I wasn't the only one in the Cragg to get this idea. I bet between the fudge and the energy drinks, Sassy's gets a noticeable increase in business during doom season. :p

Also, the downside of the Cragg is that once someone discovers an internet based procrastinatable, the entire department knows about it within two days. We are all currently addicted to Web Boggle. :p

So, the biggest sign that I wasn't in the Maritimes any more was going to a pizza place and NOT seeing garlic fingers. It was a really strange experience, since pizza and garlic fingers is like burgers and fries down here. I keep forgetting that the things are regional. My mother insists that she'd seen them before we moved out east, but everyone else I talk to swears that this is the only place they've seen them, so frankly she may be remembering wrong. Clearly the solution to this is an LJ poll!
