Grah, why doesn't the world understand that grad students have INCOME? It's not GREAT income, but it's income!

Apparently the reason we've had so little luck with the animal shelter is that they get as far as me being a student and Ryan still looking for work and reject us out of hand. How do they think we're LIVING?

I guess I'll have to find a way to clarify this on the application.

I want a kitty. :(

Mostly I'm just frustrated that APPARENTLY a cat is better off in a teensy cage than living with us. Because that makes sense.

That's pretty sad.... mabye fudge it slightly, and list yourself as a Research Assistant or something? I hope you guys can get a cat.

Maybe I'll phrase it "Graduate Research Assistant". Technically that's the title where a lot of my pay comes from. (The other is Graduate Teaching Assistant)

I'm surprised you had to fill out an application. Down here, they'll give them away to anyone who will take them.

I've never seen an animal shelter so determined not to find homes for animals! Back in Moncton, if you walk into the SPCA they go "WAAAAAAAARM BODIIIIIIIIIES!"

Is it an SPCA one though? There was a privately owned one my mom went to, and when she said she'd be tying it up when it was outside, they wouldn't give her one. Private shelters can have wierd rules.....

Which was all STUPID, because it was a law at the time, and our last dog had died by getting run over. Her friend got us a barn dog, who couldn't stand being inside and lived a long life just fine outside most of the time [though when she was younger she did get hit by the same person who hit our previous dog 0_o]

It's the local humane society, we don't seem to explicitly have an SPCA. And if they had rules against students having pets, they should SAY it somewhere.

That's how it is here. They all but pay you to take them. :P I second the "free to good home" newspaper idea someone else had.

Oooh, good luck. Yeah, I'd suggest the newspaper ads and listing your job as "Graduate Research Assistant", or even leave off the "graduate" part, if necessary.

When we got our kitties from the humane society, they called our landlord to make sure it was okay. Maybe they've had problems with "returns" from students, and that's why they're being so careful?

But good luck. You will soon find a kitty to own you :D

They asked for our landlord's number too, which made sense to me.

The thing that REALLY bugs me is that they looked over our application after we filled it out, and asked for clarification on things like whether the pets I listed as now being with my parents were family pets rather than animals that we ditched. And yet they didn't tell us students aren't allowed to adopt!

Apparently one of the local petstores provides space for rescue organizations to showcase their animals rather than selling from a mill or whatever, so I might look into that. (All I saw in the paper were puppies. EXPENSIVE puppies that were, like, BREEDS. :p)
