Oct. 16th, 2007 12:10 amSo, the New York Theatre Workshop of Rent? Is SERIOUSLY WEIRD.
First of all there's this incredibly weird song where they're... playing Monopoly with Benny? I assume it's a metaphor. Like, I thought "Contact" was confusing, but it has nothing on "Do A Little Business" :p
It's kinda awesome. :p
Mimi MOOS when she gets better.
Instead of "One Song Glory" we get "The Right Brain".
Mark is much more hung up on Maureen. The lead in to "I'll Cover You" is roughly...
Mark: It's Maureen, don't look! Is she with anyone?
Roger: You just said not to look!
Angel: We'll never be that desperate.
Collins: You'll never have to be.
Angel: Been hearing violins all night.
Collins: Anything to do with me... Are we a thing?
Angel: Darling, we're everything.
And then there's "Goodbye Love". HOLY COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FEELING BATMAN.
You know the "Mark has got his work, Mark's in love with his work, Mark hides in his work." part?
MARK SINGS IT. MARK sings "From facing my failure, facing my loneliness, facing the fact I live a lie. Yes I live a lie, tell you why, I'm always preaching not to be numb, when that's how I thrive!"
Roger responds with "You don't live a lie, tell you why. You never finish your film because the standards you set are to high. But the truth is you're the one with the talent and the drive. The truth is you're the one of us to survive.
And their scene ends with "Love you. Call." "Love you too. I hate the fall." This is after a whole bit about "Is there anything I you need in Santa Fe?" "Look, if you need me, just call and I'll come back."
That's you know, only COMPLETELY THE OPPOSITE of the final version. What with "You shouldn't leave!" "Screw you!" "You suck!" "No, YOU SUCK!" "Well all my friends are gonna die! EMOOOOOOOOOO!"

Date: 2007-10-16 12:08 pm (UTC)Like most of my weird musicals and foreign csts, I got it from the Comm of Win.
Since I'm not supposed to explicitly name it in a public post... go to my userinfo and look for the comm that looks like it would have weird and wonderful Broadway music. :p

Date: 2007-10-16 01:13 pm (UTC)Also, I wouldn't be so fast to assume any metaphors...just look what happened when we thought Angel killing the dog was one XD

Date: 2007-10-16 02:39 pm (UTC)Also, at least we didn't use THIS version of "La Vie BOheme" for "La Vie Sloshed Stu", because the Verse from Hell is even LONGER.
THough I love that in this version, Mark proposes bathroom sex with Maureen in the middle of the song. :p (And is of course rejected with "Dude, I'm a DYKE!" :p)
That's true. They could very well ACTUALLY BE PLAYING Monopoly and singing a freaky song with lots of word repitition. :p

Date: 2007-10-16 04:05 pm (UTC)I must say, this version of "GOodbye Love"? Roger/Mark shipper's dream. :p (Well, other than the bit about it being easier to come back for a friend than to burn with a lover. :p)

Date: 2007-10-16 04:17 pm (UTC)Or maybe Mark and Roger can just hook up. Though that might damage the whole "one to survive thing."

Date: 2007-10-16 05:00 pm (UTC)Mark and Roger hooking up would work for a while, but what he REALLY needs is a ho lacking in the AIDS department. :p

Date: 2007-10-17 07:15 pm (UTC)In my experience anything with "workshop" in the title/name is going to be. . .at the very least. . .different. It's when actors/directors/techies get to play. And play they will.
And that is all I'll say on this subject because, after a traumatic experience once stage managing a musical, I really dislike musicals. REALLY DISLIKE.
