Apparently, Yoda is writing for Inorganic Chemistry. The article I'm reading right now includes this gem:

To our knowledge, known is only one class of such compounds

Is this what they mean by the whole scientists don't know how to write thing? :p

Wow, that's bad. At least when Yoda mixes his word order around, it makes a bit of sense without too much work!

I was like turning my head sideways trying to make sense of the sentence. I don't know WHY they thought that "known" went THERE in the sentence and before the "is"! :p

There are days I think a "How to be COHERENT" class should be mandatory for a BSc at all universities. :p

Well, I think most universities have a mandatory English class or something...at least some of them do.

There's a difference between a "How to BS literary analysis" course and a "How to string sentences together so people don't turn their heads sideways to follow your logic" course though. Scientists don't really need the literary analysis, but GOD do a lot of them ever need some lessons on paragraphs.

Of course, then I would be required to take this class. I'd probably end up strangling someone. :p

I don't enjoy English classes devoted to grammary stuff that I already KNOW.

And then there's German. "Anything goes as long as the conjugated verb is second. Except, of course, when the conjugated verb goes at the end." :p

Oh, German's a riot. :D The Yoda-syntax thing, though? It isn't just me that thinks so; my teacher showed us a little article about syntax, and there was a sidebar that said which languages have syntax like Yoda's. Japanese is only a partial match; verb-object-subject occurs with slightly lower frequency than subject-object-verb, Yoda's being the former. I think. I'm trying to think of examples, and his verb clauses are all split so it's hard. ^_^'> Anyway, whether or not I just made an idiot of myself, there is one language that seems to be an exact syntactic match, but I can't remember what it was. Maybe something African, or possibly Australian Aborigine - I really can't remember, and it's too bad, because it was interesting! (I can't imagine why I didn't write it down...)

My roommate did a paper for Linguistics about word order where Yoda got a place of honour. Which meant a lot of watchign the films to see what exactly it is he DOES to words. :p

This was inspired by my English for Science Students prof trying to explain syntax and adding the very memorable "Yoda has fucked up syntax." :p
