*takes the ax to the stupid error message*
So, volume 4 of Pretear finally came in (*huggles Hobbyton*). Definitely paid off to be asking about it every week, since they remembered it was my order. (Have I mentioned lately that I LOVE Hobbyton?) Anyway, WOW, it ends differently from the anime!
Oh. My. God.
Shin DIES.
Just thought I'd get that out of my system right away.
The first half of the volume, while serious, is sprinkled with a lot of lighthearted moments. Including Himeno picturing the Knights as her classmates when Hayate asks her to imagine if they weren't Knights. The point being that just as being Knights is part of who they are, being Pretear is part of who she is. End result, Kei is the brainiac correcting the teacher, Goh is in cooking class, Sasame has all the girls staring and Hayate is eating in class.
Kei is really cool. They were mean to him in the anime. Light Pretear is ugly as ever, but the Sceptre of Light is SO much cooler than the Chakram of Light!
Adorable moment when the kids come to search the house, wearing cute little explorer outfits. Mannen wants to search the kitchen, Hajime wants to see the pool and Shin is interested in the greenhouse. Shin's magnifying glass is cute beyond belief.
Sasame gets to stand on top of a random tower to listen to the world and look cool. Then he gets a really weird moment with Mawata where she proclaims her love and angsts. He says he can listen to her problems but he's not the one she really wants. She then yells at him for not understanding. "We're a lot alike. Including the part that wants something we can't have."
The KNights come across Himeno's mother's grave. One of the kids asks what kind of person a "mom" is, which confuses the hell out of Himeno. Hajime and SHinShin beg her to answer, and Hayate explains that the Knights don't have parents. (Thanks for confirming, Angstleech!) Himeno says that what she remembers of her mother is that she was kind and warm. ShinShin says that's just like her. Hajime asks Himeno to be their mom. Mannen says she's going to be his GIRLFRIEND. Hajime and ShinShin snuggle to Himeno. Then Mannen goes "Me too...", which was such a great little moment, since deep down, he is still a kid. Himeno is somewhat mystified, but decides to just hug them (good girl!).
Then Kaoru leaves, which had me thinking
non_horation really HAD gotten to another ship. Which made me laugh and cry all at once. Good job, Tessie. :p
Sasame has FAR too much fun teasing Hayate, with all his "You love her, don't you?". Hayate freaks out and Sasame snickers about how much fun this is. Then there's weirdness about "I thought YOU loved her" and Sasame just smirking.
Then we find out that (da nah!) Natsue is fully possessed by the Princess of Disaster. Tres sucky. :p
Then oh no, there are evil trees all over the city, too many to purify. In a moment reminiscent of volume one, Kei suggests burning the trees with Goh's fire and Himeno refuses. GOh is taken aback, since he still hasn't had his turn. Shin then says to let HIM take care of it, because he doesn't want to kill the trees either. Someone (possibly Kei?) tells Himeno to wait because Shin can't handle it yet (see: him passing out in volume one from overuse of power) So, Pretage happens, leading to a HUGE ASS PLANT ATTACK (cluster of vines) that covers the whole city. Then they're done. Hayate runs to Himeno while Hajime runs to ShinShin. Shin says "I'm fine! I'm a Knight too!" Hajime puts his hand on SHin's head really cutely and says "That's right" and I'm all "Awwww!"
Then I turn the page and Himeno is thanking Shin.
And then he DIES.
SHIN.
DIES.
They killed SHINSHIN.
Little Leafe bubbles and his amulet clattering to the ground.
I'm upset. Hajime is absolutely DISTRAUGHT.
Cue a couple minutes of me staring at the page going "Eh deh beh deh?"
SHIN
DIED
Needless to say, Himeno now has even more angst than before and runs off. Hajime is still bawling his eyes out. God, will someone give HIM a hug?
Sasame gets Kei to use his 1337 h4ckz0r ski11z0r to take over the airwaves to help find Himeno. Sasame yells at Kei for giving him "That scary look". Sasame makes a television broadcast about the current unpleasantness. Including angsting about Takako. He never names her by name, but it's pretty darn obvious.
Hayate tracks down Himeno. Himeno angsts about pushing Shin too far and getting him killed. Hayate tells her it's okay to quit and hey, he's quitting too. He doesn't want another Pretear than her. (Aww! Shippy!)
Mawata angsts and hates Himeno, but she's the only one she can turn to to save Natsue. Goh FINALLY gets to Pret with Himeno. We don't see the ax though. :( Himeno apologizes for not noticing that Mawata was angsting. Then all the Knights come to Pret with her together (Shin's amulet glows since he's DEAD) and we get...
Yep, you guessed it. The White Pretear.
Off to have a chat with Natsue she goes. Mawata reveals that the reason Kaoru left was to write a book for Natsue. (OMG, a ship avoided the Tessie effect! Maybe my OFP is safe!) Himeno has a vision of her mother. Hug for Natsue, white snow falls
Cut to a scene at the restaurant, with ShinShin looking cuter than ever and Hajime looking like one happy kid. SHin's looks pretty happy too, since he's not dead anymore and all. I'm a happy Ewok.
GOh: I can't believe Shin came back to life! (I believe it. I'm just confused. :p)
Kei: Well of course. THe White Pretear created Leafe of Plants and... (Thank you Kei! I love it when you exposit my confusion away, you Exposition Fairy you! :p)
Hayate: Himeno!
Goh: I don't like this.
Kei: Then get a GIRLFRIEND.
Goh: I don't want to here that from YOU!
Me: BWAH? Is THIS where the Kei/Goh shippers are getting it from? Because that was one HELL of a weird moment there.
Happiness, happiness, happiness for Himeno's family.
SASAME IN GLASSES.
Because of the TV broadcast, his fangirls now recognize him. So he's wearing sexy glasses to try to disguise himself. It's not working.
Sasame hits on Himeno for the hell of it. Hayate gets annoyed, tries to say something. Himeno gets annoyed and storms off. I glare at them both.
Sasame: He REALLY doesn't know how to handle the girls. Get with it already!
Kei and Goh muse on the fact that THAT'S the White Pretear.
Weird shippy epilogue with Himeno and Hayate. BUt they're still SO FRUSTRATING AND CUTE. :p
My only real complaint (other than the whole OMG THEY KILLED SHIN GAH! thing) is that the ending seemed REALLY rushed. It could have been fleshed out a LOT more. Things like Shin coming back to life being very after the fact and the whole de-eviling of Natsue happening so fast. I would have LOVED for it to be longer. Still, an enjoyable ending.

Date: 2005-02-17 04:43 am (UTC)Did they mention anything about Takako? Tell me they didn't cut my favorite pairing. Sasame and Takako go together like otaku and pocky.
I was really suprised that Pretear was only four volumes. I was also suprised that we only had one copy of vol. 4 and my friend Stephanie got to it before I did. She supposed to let me borrow it though. So I'll get to read it eventually.
(no subject)
Date: 2005-02-17 12:28 pm (UTC)We don't SEE much of Takako, but she is alluded to. Sasame talks about how he was in love with a girl, but she was in love with someone else and didn't know about HIS feelings. It's pretty clear it means Takako, especially if you know how things play out in the anime. (OTHER than Shin NOT DYING)
I figured it had to have been pretty short because the anime was only 13 episodes. I think it could have used another volume though, because the ending was VERY rushed. And we only see Fire Pretear for about two pages. And no ax. :(
Our comic shop is really small (though we love it to pieces and are still amazed that it EXISTS), so they had to special order volume 4 for us. Especially since we hadn't bought the rest of the series from them, so they really had no reason to have it. Then we just had to wait for the volume to make it through The Bubble.
One of my friends was with me when it came in, and she kept trying to steal it all through supper. In the end, she gave me until after her job interview to get it read. (which was a pretty simple taks :p) She came up and read it right there, because she knew I desperately wanted someone to talk to about it. So we got to angst together. :p

Date: 2005-02-18 12:27 pm (UTC)Overall, I think I like the way the STORY is done better in the anime, but I like the way a lot of the CHARACTERS are handled better in the manga.
And I will NEVER complain about not seeing Plant Pretear in the anime again.

Date: 2005-02-18 05:20 am (UTC)Though since the manga just came out, it can't be where the ship was coming from.
Poor Shin (I'll do the scans tomorrow, got caught up doing website stuff)

Date: 2005-02-18 12:28 pm (UTC)Yeah, I know, it's just ODD.
Yay scans. Except not REALLY yay because they're not happy scans. Well, except the ones for cuteness and the last one. Point is, there are unhappy scans.
