You know it's cold when Vicki is going along with my insane singing. We spent most of the day going "Havana! Havana! Wish I was in Havana! I'm getting really sick of snow!" We're now determined to fully re-write the song, complete with verses about "Who am I kidding, I've no money! I live in student poverty!" We just need the original lyrics so we can get syllable counts. The general gist of it is that we would REALLY like to be in "HAVANA FREAKING CUBA!" right now.

This morning, we were one of the only schools that was still open. It was sheer misery getting to class. They did end up closing down the school at 1:30. No one thought to tell my classics prof though, so we found out about the closure when we got out of that class at 2:30. Even more incredible is the fact that they actually cancelled rehearsal.

I suppose that about sums it up. I'm more of a "If it isn't canon, you have to convince me" fan when it comes to slash OR het though. The answers of that persuasion happen to lean towards that result. And who knows what was with the favorite colour question. I guess every quiz just needs it. Why was green missing though? I had to pick a second favorite. :p

*giggle*,

So, in between our insane rehearsals of madness, Vicki and I had a chance to watch the first two episodes of Pretear dubbed. Vicki forgot that was the whole point of borrowing the DVD and automatically set it to subtitled. We're really too used to watching subs. :p

Okay, first off, bad pronunciation makes Baby ShinShin cry. Himeno got pronounced Hi-MEE-no. Yayoi was pronounced Ya-yo-ee (except by Yayoi herself, who got it right :p). Sasame, Hayate and Hajime all had the emPHAsis on the wrong sylLAble. It's a shame, since if it weren't for that, it would be a good dub. Now for the character by character analysis. No numbers though, just comments because I feel like it. :p

Himeno- I'm rather not fond of this voice. It sounds much too young and it's too soft for our atypical shoujo heroine. Plus, she sounds like the cat in my sister's old Crayola Magic Wardrobe game. Everytime Himeno transforms, I half expect her to start explaining the various layers of her costume and their historical significance.

Hayate- He's fairly good. Nothing to really write home about, but not bad.

Sasame- This is one sexy voice. It's really soft and soothing, which suits him perfectly. I'm curious how he's going to handle the later material. Hopefully it will be as well as he pulled off the early stuff. God, I love listening to this voice!

Goh- Okay, first off, I hate them for romanticizing it as Go. It's VALID, but it looks STUPID and leads to the Monopoly joke. Anyway, his Njnja Turtle Michaelangelo voice threw me a bit at first. It rather suits him though. One of Himeno's lines leads me to suspect Goh might be talking in some sort of dialect in Japanese, so this is their way of capturing it. Either way, it suits the kind of high spirited guy he is. By the third episode, I stopped expecting him to say "Cowabunga!" and scarf pizza. :p

Kei- I'm quite fond of this voice. I like it being distinctly masculine. Poor shafted Kei needs all the help he can get in this department. It fits with the personality we know Kei has, even though he doesn't get to show it often. The dub seems to give him a bit more expression, too. I can't wait until I actually get my bloody credit card so I can order the whole series. I want to see how he handles episode seven, which I consider to be Kei's best episode. (The ABOP episode, if you're not sure :p)

Mannen- A little old, but that really can't be helped. He NEEDS to have a male voice actor, and you can only make an adult male sound so young. The voice suits his personality, at any rate.

Hajime- I'm greatly excited about this voice. It actually has PERSONALITY. I'd even go so far as to say he has spunk.

Shin- Sounds too soft and feminine. I think the VA is used to doing little girls. It could have been a lot worse, since there aren't all that many VAs out there that can do five year olds. At any rate, the voice is cute and not annoying, so I'm content even if it's not perfect.

Mawata- Really, really good so far. Nothing much to say, but it's quite impressive acting.

Mayune- Quite appropriate. I was taken with it almost immediately.

Natsue- Definitely has the acting range to go from lovey dovey to imperious quickly.

Kaoru- Quite good for goofy Kaoru. He's all we'll hear from for the next little bit.

Tanaka- I like it.

Typi/Yayoi- Typi is cute as ever. I think I need a bit more time to get accustomed to Yayoi. At least she pronounces her name right, even if no one else does. :p

Thoughts on the script: Now, I can't comment on whether it's accurate or not, but I know that I like it. SOme of it is slightly different phrasing than the fansub opted for, which seemed to work better. When Himeno is talking to Sasame, and she says she wishes all men could be more like him, he says "I agree." It just so suits creepy Sasame. :p "That Mannen" became "Dammit Mannen!"

One of my favorites is an example of Hajime with personality. A line that had been "You protected Mannen, didn't you?" in the fansub became (in response to Mannen talking about how he didn't do much in the battle) "That's because you were too busy being saved by Himeno!"

The only saddening thing was Shin's anti-hug in the second episode. It takes place during the bit where the kids all want to be the next to Pret with Himeno. Shin does his little "With me! With me!" (very cutely done, I might add), and Mannen says "Shut up, Shorty!" Shin starts crying, as he is wont to do. Mannen is all "Great, now he's crying. I bet he thinks he can get whatever he wants!" and Himeno says "Don't cry, Shin. You're a big boy!"

But he's not big! He's little! Just hug him already!

Must...hug...Shin...cuteness...demands...it.

I love Pretear and if Sasame were a real person, I would so stalk him. *proclaims self offical Stalker of Sasame...SOS*

Natsue's English voice has become sort of joke with me and my friends. In the middle of watching it, someone pointed out that she never, EVER, says Kaoru's name in a normal, conversational tone. It's always KAOOOOOru with a funny little lilt at the end of it.

So now, whenever there's an extended period of silence in the group, someone always goes "KAOOOOOru!"

I feel so bad for Kei. He looks like he's on crack. Why did they change his appearance so drastically? The only thing I could think of was that MangaKei and MangaSasame look similar and they didn't want to confuse viewers.

Oh good, you gave Goh his missing 'h' back. He was looking for it.

Have you ever seen D.N.Angel? Half of the English cast of Pretear provide voices for that show. Hayate's VA does the voice of Krad-which is actually Dark spelled backwards, it took me four manga volumes and a dvd to figure that out. I'm not very observant. ^_^ He actually does a fairly good job of it. My only gripe is that he does a random British accent at the very beginning of the dvd. Just long enough to say one line and then it disappears for the rest of the dvd. Go figure.

Mannen's VA does Hiwatari Satoshi's voice and sounds terrific. I was kind of worried that they'd screw Satoshi's voice up, but the VA actually managed to convey the "I don't care about anything...am cold unavailable detective" impression.

You've also got Himeno's VA, Hajime's VA and someone else from the series that I can't remember in there. I think it's Natsue. Not really sure.

Eeeeeee, I love Pretear. ^_^

*goes off to stalk Sasame*

I know. I pity Kei. He looks like Nuriko in the manga.

And a drag queen in the anime. ^_^

The "I am not a stalker" bit in the manga cracked me up.

See, I did it backwards, read the manga and then watched the anime with a group of fellow anime addicts. We spent the first episode and a half just making fun of AnimeKei and mourning the loss of Manga!Kei.
