Jan. 9th, 2005 11:25 pmANime was super amazing fun last night. I'm so excited that we finally got our massive anime order of DOOM. Seventeen DVDs! SEVENTEEN! Plus five random VHS they threw in for free. Possibly to get rid of them. One looks interesting and pretty, but is volume 2. ANother is apparently good and is also volume 2. A couple of the others look rather sketchy.
We were going to borrow the first DVD of Pretear to check out the dub, but Lindsay wanted to watch it. Since she hasn't actually seen the series, we let her. And offered fansubs so she doesn't have to leave off at episode four for very long.
We watched Hellsing, which looks to be an interesting series.
Then we watched Excel Saga. OMG, INSANE! I love it so much! It's HILARIOUS! I mean, they even make the FBI warning funny! Did you know that it's not to be used as a contraceptive device? What's not to love about a show where the main character dies within five minutes, only to be told that she's not allowed? Oh, and Menchi needs a hug. Badly.\
The we watched Armitage III, which was also interesting. We have the whole thing, so yay.
Best value? Nadesico turned out to have two discs, totalling 9 episodes for about $15. Worst value? FLCL was two episodes for $20. I mean really, who puts a six episode series on THREE DVDs?
We had reworking fun at G&G. El Bravo turned out to not suffer quite so much from the pit being at centre stage. Basically, we just have to find another person to be lifted up and another group of lifters, since the lift has to be moved to the side. Thus, we need another one to balance it. I get to have some sort of duel with the other liftee.
It's rather sad that the hardest part of my German homework was coming up with New Years resolutions. I wound up pretending to have a coffee addiction. :p I got most of my Organic done at rehearsal. EEP, that midterm is early. So is Hero's Quest. And there's the paper I should start researching too. Silly schoolwork, always getting in my way.
So, I was reading badfic today, because I'm silly like that. Scarily, I got a plot bunny. Worse, it was a ROMANCE plot bunny. I'm so not a romance writer but I want to write this fic. It was one of those "They handled the pairing really badly, but it could actually be a really interesting couple" moments.
Kei/Yayoi. Getting her to like him will be easy. It will lead to humour. Getting him to like her will be interesting to say the least.

Date: 2005-01-10 06:03 am (UTC)What VHS did they get? I might be able to elaborate on the goodness/badness of them.
Nadesico is GREAT! I'm glad you guys got it. I have the 2nd and 6th vhs, and the last 2 dvds [which is actally a lot, 15 eps, but I might get that Essential One sometime. I try to avoid rebuying stuff I have on vhs on dvd, but it's that good :)]. Most of ADV's essential line is done as 2 disc sets, for 19.99 srp each. I'd suggest checking out BubbleGumCrisis Tokyo2040 which is one of my fave shows, which'll be in 3 2-disc sets :)
Animaritime is only 2 months away!
FLCL's expensive and only 2 eps because it was a really new japanese series [2002/3] released by a really small company [Synch Point, who only have 3 other licenses, I'm Gonna Be an Angel, the original DigiCharat series/movie/ova's and Aquarian Age 2]. It was probably expensive for them to get, so this way they made their money back. 2 eps was the standard in early vhs days. Glad I got into anime on the tail end of that. You mostly only see 6 episode OVA's on one disc if they're a) rereleased from a VHS issue, or b)really cheap for the licensor to get. I'd suggest checking out Orguss 02, Macross II, or Dominion Tank Police series 1 or series 2 for a good "whole OVA in one cheap shot" experience.

We watched the first episode of Nadesico at a meeting last year, right?
ACK! STRESS! ANIMARITIME! (Not that I'm not excited :p)
We were just confused since the least I'd ever seen on a DVD was three episodes. Two discs struck me as being logical for six episodes.

Date: 2005-01-11 04:17 pm (UTC)I've been collecting anime since 1998 or so, and 2 episode vhs/dvd's are more common then you think. Most of ADV and Viz's releases pre-DVD were 2 episode per release ones [Evangelion, Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku, BubbleGumCrisis 2040 etc]. Way back in the early 90's, it's just how business was done, as anime sold a lot less, and if you were doing a dubbed release, that's how you could afford one. Though Animeigo tended to keep their TV-series releases at 4 eps/vhs. But those were sub only, and cheaper to produce.
There was even single episode releases, like the Gunsmith Cats and Cutey Honey OVA's from ADV [which later got double episode releases]. When the Tenchi Muyo OVA series first came out, it's first 6 epsidoes were released on single VHS's too [I have some of them :) Nice clamshells though] I think that was around 1995 or so though.
Even now, you still see some single episode [or double] releases here and there, mostly with OVA's. Funimation did it nicely with their Sakura Wars:Sumire release that was 9.99, while ADV is doing it poorly by making the GANTZ Tv series a 2 episode dvd release [apparently at the japanese licensors request].
On a related note, a vast majority of Japanese DVD's are STILL 2 episodes per disc. Could you imagine how much shelf space/money you'd use collecting Inu Yasha at 2 episodes per 50 dollar disc? [it's true! that's how much it is!] We're spoiled by comparison [Fancy LaLa Vol.1 is 10 bucks for 5 episodes bilingual!]
We did watch Nadesico Vol.1, the first 2 episodes of it. It was good :)
