Canadian currency 101

Since Sunny was asking about it during last night's (AWESOME) episode of How I Met Your Mother...

Yes, the Canadian five dollar bill really does have a picture of kids playing hockey on it. But while there is a beaver on our nickle, there is no moose on any of our coins.

It's a caribou.

Yay for original national symbols - who needs dead people anyway? :p

My favourite is explaining to tourists about our coinage
me: "It's called a loonie, because that's a loom on the back"
them: 0_o? You know, in the US, 'loonie' is slang-
me: for crazy person. Here too. Now the two dollar coin is called a "toonie" because it's two loonies. Yep. There was much debate over this. Toonie won out over dubloonie"

Either way, not a moose. Sorry Barney.

TRUE STORY: Tessie actually sent me a Canadian 5 one time, I still have it in with all of my hockey memorabilia.

It's really pretty.

Why is American money so boring -__-

I remember when the new bills came out. I think it was the last time I worked at DQ. :P They look like friggin' Euros compared with the old ones, and I hadn't been paying attention to the fact that new ones were being released, so the day I got a customer paying with a new five, I was completely thrown. I actually looked for the part that said "This note is legal tender" before I put it in the till. XD They're so shiny and fancy! And now it's the old ones that look weird. I had a guy in a couple weeks ago, moved here from somewhere in the North of England, and he almost gave me an old five before realising he had exact change. We had a great conversation about British and European currency, latitudes of world capitals, and relative populations thereof. Did you know London's the biggest city in Europe?

I like Canadian money. It's more interesting than ours. Although the Mint's been changing up the coins in the last decade or so. The state/territory quarters are rather pretty. Finally, I only mutter, "Why is our money so boring compared to everyone else's?" half the time when I open my wallet, instead of every time. :P
