Watch Robotech, or Macross [things makes a little more sense in Macross, and the music's nicer] when you get the chance someday. Claudia is a great character, and Pineapple Salad [don't look it up! it'd be a big spoiler] is where her character really comes into prominence in the series overall.
Minmay does grow in the series, realizing her Mary Sue-ness as it goes on. Also, Lisa's chararacter is one to watch too. Come for the giant robots, stay for the love triangle :)
