If the recommended titles in your little flyer thingy have been selected based on my purchase history, why are they all hardcover?

(They do sound interesting. But they're HARDCOVER you silly thing! :p)

(although I did splurge a couple of years ago and spend my Christmas money on a hardcover boxed set of The Lord of the Rings illustrated by Alan Lee, but I didn't own my own copy at that point and how could I not?)

They do it for same reason the ads on a LJ sponsored account (which should be based on things listed in my intrests) occasionally show ads for drug rehab.

I have no idea where that comes from. Unless maybe they saw the 'organ donation' one and thought "Hmm. Organ recipients take drugs...drug rehab!"

But I kinda need those drugs. I do not wish to be rehabilitated.

I buy the occasional hardcover if it's the latest installment of something that EATS MY SOUL and I don't feel like not clicking on cuts in the comm for the rest of the year. Though for some series, I manage to get my father to buy the book for me so he can read it too. :p But recommending something new to try based on my search history? DUDE, I am NOT going to pick up a HARDCOVER of an untried author. :p

Likewise. I usually just borrow, though, for stuff like that. Harry Potter, for instance; I caved and bought the hardcover for OotP, but I just borrowed a copy of HBP from a friend. Not that that series eats my soul; the only one I own is OotP. But, you know, it's not something you want to wait for because you know everyone's going to be posting spoilers as soon as they're allowed. :P

It IS. SO SHINY. In a box, yet. So far I haven't managed to examine it thoroughly, much to my shame; one has not always time to get immersed in a long trilogy. But I intend to do so this summer. :D

HP is easy. My entire family reads it. They WILL buy it for me. And then there's evil competition over who gets to read it first. HBP worked out nicely though because I was only home for the weekend so I got to read it first. It was the only time anyone ever TOLD me to go read. Then Father Jeff threatened to excommunicate me if I spoiled him. :p

I read the beginning of something like that once. Hobbie crashed on Middle Earth. It was neat, because they didn't speak the same language. It never got finished though, as far as I know.
